Spirit Airlines explains math behind carry-on luggage fee

It's basically all a numbers game. There is simply no more room left in the overhead bins. The fee will also cut five minutes from each flight boarding time, adding up to an additional 20 hours of airplane time each day. The fee will help the airline raise revenue.
